LIMA, Ohio.- On Monday, the Madonna University Baseball team suffered a 7-2 defeat at the hands of University of Northwestern Ohio in game one of the 2021 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship Series in Lima.Â
TURNING POINT
- A hit-by-pitch sent a Racer across home plate with bases loaded in the third inning to break the scoring drought in what, up to that point, had been a fast-paced game.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After UNOH reached home in the third, both teams stayed fairly stagnant until later in the game, around the seventh inning
- The Racers scored off one of four Madonna errors in the game before a big eighth inning saw UNOH bring five runners across
- In the ninth, Kyle Aniol started off the inning with a walk, advancing to to second off an Adrian Reed fly ball into left field to set up the first Crusader in scoring position on the afternoon
- Zach Beadle then poked one through the right side to load up the bases for Madonna as Nick Sykes' single to left sent Aniol home for Madonna's first run of the championship
- With Reed now on third, Gordon Ferguson's sacrifice fly brought home Madonna's second, and final, run of the dayÂ
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- Madonna's two hits and two runs all came in the ninth inning
TOP PERFORMERS
- Ferguson with two hits in three at bats and an RBI in the ninth inning while Sykes collected an RBI on a single hit as well
