Crusaders power through Cougars on way to sweep

THE BASICS
Score: Game 1:

Location: Lake Trust Stadium - Howell, Mich.

HOWELL, Mich.- The Madonna University baseball team traveled for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup against the Cougars of cleary University for their first of three doubleheaders this upcoming weekend

GAME 1

TURNING POINT
  • Crusaders took the lead in the top of the sixth as Zachary Beadle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, as that gave Madonna the final lead of the game. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars were able to strike first in the bottom half of the opening inning when they had the bases loaded and were able to bring home a batter with a ground out.
  • The lead didn't last long as the Crusaders would strike in both the second and third inning as Ryan Celmer hit a double with two outs and Noah Moore would follow that up with an RBI single to right field. In the third, the Cougars were attempting to finish off the inning with a double play but Gordon Ferguson would beat the throw to first and bring home the second Madonna run.
  • The second lead change occurred in the bottom of the third with Cleary taking back two runs on back-to-back plays as they hit a sacrifice fly and also scored another from a ground out. 
  • In the fourth the Crusaders would score for the third straight inning as Kyle Aniol and Adrian Reed would both nab RBI on straight hits with two out. Cleary would tie the game in the bottom half though as they would get their first hit of the game on an RBI double to left field.
  • In the sixth, Beadle came up with the bases loaded and ended up getting hit by a pitch and gave the Crusaders the lead. 
  • Madonna would take three runs in the top of the eighth inning that was led off with a Moore home run, Beadle brought in Reed with an RBI triple and Matkin would bring in an unearned run as he reached base on a Cleary error.
  • The Cougars would not go away and attempt a comeback in the bottom as they would bring in two on a home run but that would be it for them as John Beuckelaere would come in to pitch the ninth and close out the game. 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • Five different Crusaders tallied a hit in the game as they were led by Moore with four. 
  • Madonna batters hit for the cycle as Celmer hit a double, Beadle hit a triple and Moore finished it off with a homer
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Moore went a perfect 4-4 as he would hit a solo shot in the top of the eighth and bring in another runin the second on a single. 
  • Beadle hit .500 throughout the first game as he would bring in two runs and add in a triple on the game. 
  • Bullard earned the win in the game as he went 3.1 innings while giving up two hits and struck out four batters. 
PITCHING DECISION
  • Win: Bullard (2-2)
  • Loss: Larner (1-3)
  • Save: Beuckelaere (5)

GAME 2
TURNING POINT
  • Jace Matkin's two run home run in the top of the ninth gave the Crusaders the 8-6 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cleary struck first twice in the bottom of the second on consecutive sacrifice flies to right field. 
  • Madonna though would score six straight runs in the third and fourth innings as Beadle brought in the first runs of the inning on a double and Matkin would immediately follow up with a triple to bring in two runs.Ferguson brought in Matkin on a sacrifice hit. In the fourth Beadle would once again bring in two on a double and the sixth Crusader run came from Alex Garbacik as he walked with the bases loaded.
  • The Cougars quickly tied the game back up though in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded brought the first two runs in. Two more runs would come in on a Cougar single to left center field to tie the game up at six.
  • The game would stay tied up until the ninth inning as Beadle would lead the inning off with getting hit by a pitch and Matkin would hit his second home run of the season to give the Crusaders an 8-6 lead.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • Crusader hitters saw the power come to life once again as they got five extra base hits throughout the game. 
  • Six Crusader hitters got into the hit column as Beadle led with three.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Matkin brought in half of the Madonna runs with four RBI's, as he hit 2-5 in the game. 
  • Beadle went 3-4 and scored two runs and brought in another two runs. 
  • Coming in in relief Joe Wozniak pitched 4.1 innings and gave up five hits while striking out three.

  • Loss: Baeza (0-2)
  • Save: Ryan Dusang (1)
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will next travel to Sylvania, Ohio for their next WHAC doubleheader against the Grey Wolves of Lourdes University on Saturday April 24 with first pitch at 1PM.
