Crusaders earn 19th straight win against Lourdes in sweep

THE BASICS

SYLVANIA, Ohio- Tha Madonna University baseball team traveled just across state lines yesterday for the second part of their three game road trip as they were able to come away with a sweep against the Grey Wolves of Lourdes University. With the sweep the Crusaders get the 19th straight win against the Grey Wolves in a streak that dates back to 2014.

GAME 1

TURNING POINT
  • A four run sixth inning gave the Crusader the final lead in the game including back-to-back doubles from Kyle Aniol and Adrian Reed which tied the game and gave them the lead respectively. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams tallied their first runs in the second inning as the Crusaders struck first as they recorded their first runs off of a Lourdes balk and then Kyle Aniol would bring in two runs on a failed double play on the defense. The Grey Wolves would then get two runs back in the bottom half as they tallied a single and would steal home on a double steal attempt. 
  • Lourdes would take the lead in the fifth after the Crusaders put up two more runs on a home run from Reed and a single to left center field from Gordon Ferguson. Lourdes would put up three in the bottom on back-to-back singles. 
  • It was all Madonna from then on as they would finish the game with five straight by scoring four in the sixth and one in the eighth. The sixth saw doubles from Aniol and Reed and Reed scoring on a wild pitch. While the eighth Noah Moore doubled down the left field line to score Reed. 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • Five Crusader hitters tallied extra-base hits as Adrian Reed was able to grab three of them in the afternoon. 
  • Three Madonna batters tallied a multi-hit game including Reed, Ferguson and Celmer.
  • Between the two Blue and Gold pitchers they would strike out 10 Grey Wolves throughout the first game. 
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Reed continues to hit the ball well as he went 4-5 with three extra base hits, including his solo shot in the fifth.
  • Blake Garrison wound up earning the save in the game as he pitched the final four innings while only giving up one hit and striking out two. 
PITCHING DECISION
  • Win: Thacker (2-2)
  • Loss: Gargus (2-2)
  • Save: Garrison (1)

GAME 2
TURNING POINT
  • A four run first inning propelled the Crusaders to the seven inning as the Crusaders had scored two runs before recording an out. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders were on the gas pedal from the beginning as they put up seven runs in the first two innings on their way to the seven inning win. Madonna would tally singles from Jace Matkin and Reed, a triple from Beadle and a run from a wild pitch to score in the first. While the second saw Beadle and Matkin delivering again with a single and a double respectively.
  • Lourdes would get three back over the next two innings as they scored on a double play which was followed by back-to-back singles. 
  • In the fourth and fifth inning Madonna saw eight runs cross the plate as singles from Michael DiPonio, Matkin, Moore, Aniol and Reed would account for six of the runs and Matkin scoring on a wild pitch and Alex Garbacik wound up bringing DiPonio in from a triple. 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • Crusaders hitters were able to tally six extra-base hits throughout the second game as Beadle had both a double and a triple.
  • Matkin was able to reach double-digits in the stolen base column with his ninth and tenth stolen bases of the season.  
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Matkin had himself a great day at the plate and on the bases as he hit .800 with a double, four RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases. 
  • Reed had another solid game going 3-4 with two RBIs and scoring three runs.
PITCHING DECISION
  • Win: Gore (3-1)
  • Loss: Geck (3-4)
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will be back on the diamond today, Sunday April 25,  as they will go up against the Saints of Siena Heights University for their last road doubleheader of the season.
