ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Madonna University volleyball team pushed its current win streak to four and earned its 41st straight win over Concordia University (Mich.) inside Cardinal Field House on Tuesday night with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-23) victory.
The Crusaders improved to 13-4 on the season and 11-4 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Cardinals fall to 7-11 on the year and 7-8 in league play.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one was close until the Crusaders broke a tie at 15 with a 10-3 rally, which included the final four points of the game. The rally was highlighted by two kills each from Jodie Kelly, Janelle Kwasiborski, and Ryan Castle.Â
The Cardinals built an early lead, 6-4, in set two before Kelly served four straight points, which included a block by Emily Stewart and Kacie Stoneburner as well as a kill from Stoneburner for the 9-6 advantage. MU never trailed again in the set and won the final two points on a Stoneburner termination and a service ace from Karolina Noszczyk.Â
Concordia again used an early rally to take a large lead, 8-4, only to see the Blue and Gold scored 12-of-16 for a four-point margin. With the Crusaders leading 19-15, the home team won 8-of-9 points to take a 23-20 lead, but an error gave MU the serve and the Crusaders used two more Cardinal miscues to tie the score before Kelly ended the match with a pair of kills.Â
TOP PERFORMERS
- DJ Sargent hit a team-best .556 with five kills and zero errors while Kelly posted a team-high 18 kills. Kwaskiborski added nine terminations while Castle finished with eight.
- Jordyn Dawson had a team-best 25 assists while Betsy Cook added 12.
- Kelly led the defense with 22 digs while Olivia Sweeney added 20 and Sargent led MU at the net with four blocks while Kelly and Stewart each had three.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
46Â - Madonna finished with 46 kills and hit .180 (19 errors, 150 attempts) while Concordia hit .063 (32-23-143).
44 - The Blue and Gold had an assist on all but two kills in the match
