LIVONIA, Mich.- The Madonna University baseball team opened up their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and home schedule on Saturday afternoon as they took on the visiting Warriors from Rochester University.Â
GAME 1
TURNING POINT
- With the Crusaders down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Madonna would go on to score six runs in the innings to give them the lead.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors would strike first as they would score off of a single for the early 1-0 lead. The Crusaders would end up tying the game in the third when Kyle Aniol hit a single to left field that wound up scoring Steffen Dyl.
- The next three runs were in favor of Rochester in the fifth and sixth inning. In the fifth, the Warriors shortstop would single to right field that would bring in a run. In the sixth, Rochester would take advantage of a wild pitch, from Crusader pitcher Donovan Thacker, and on a double steal that would bring in the second run of the inning. In the bottom half, Alex Garbacik singled up the middle of the infield and brought in Adrian Reed for the score.
- The big inning for the Crusaders came in the bottom of the seventh as they would score six runs for the 8-4 advantage. Dyl would start the inning with a double and after an Aniol walk, Reed would hit a big 2-run triple and would come in on a sacrifice fly to center field. After back-to-back walks to Alex Garbacik would load the bases with a single. Gordon Ferguson would hit a double to renter center that would score two Crusaders. The final run would come from Joey Pejuan hit a ground ball that scored Garbacik.
- The Warriors would not go down as they would attempt a comeback and take advantage of a Crusader error, but were only able to bring one run in.Â
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- 3: The Crusaders would grab three stolen bases on the afternoon, with steals from Zachary Beadle, Ferguson, and Dyl
- 17: Victor Mencotti and Thacker would combine for 17 strikeouts throughout the game.Â
- 6: Six different Crusaders recorded hits as there were several players that had two hits.Â
TOP PERFORMERS
- Thacker went six innings as he struck out 13 batters on the day while walking two and giving up seven hits.Â
- Ferguson went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and a double in the seventh.Â
- Reed ended the game two for five with two runs scored and two runs batted in.Â
GAME 2
TURNING POINT
- The Warriors would once again take advantage of Crusaders errors as they would score two runs off errors in the top of the ninth.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors would take first blood in both of the first and second inning as they would score in the first off of a single to left field and off of a wild pitch in the top of the second.
- The Crusaders would go on to score five of their six runs in the fourth inning. Beadle would start the inning with a lead off walk. He would come around to score on a Garbacik double to left center field who would then score on a Ryan Celmer triple. Dyl would come up to bat next as he would wind up walking and scoring along with Celmer on an Aniol double.Â
- The Warriors would score the next four runs in the game spread out across three innings. Rochester's third baseman hit a big two-run home run to left field that would start to bring them back in the game. The next two runs would come from a sacrifice fly and a ground out.Â
- Madonna would tie the game in the eighth when he would bring in Marcus Cipriano on an error by the Warriors first baseman.Â
- Rochester would swing the game to them with a single to right field and an error from the Crusaders Reed.Â
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- 14: Crusader pitchers stranded 14 Warriors on base throughout the game as they left the bases loaded on multiple occasions.Â
- 3: Madonna had three extra base hits all at key points that the Crusaders were able to score off of.Â
TOP PERFORMERS
- Celmer went two for four scoring one run and had an RBI double in the Crusaders fourth inning.Â
- Dusang went three innings as he struck out six batters while giving up two runs on five hits.Â
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will lhav a week off before they take on the University of Northwestern Ohio in a double header next Saturday with first pitch happening at 1 PM.
