Crusaders take game two from Golden Eagles, drop game one

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Madonna University baseball team returned to play on Friday as they traveled to Grand Rapids to take on Cornerstone University for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader. 

GAME 1

TURNING POINT
  • The Golden Eagles' three-run second inning started the scoring for Cornerstone, including a two-run triple.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cornerstone started the scoring in the second inning as Grant Young brought in two runs on an RBI triple to right center field. Joshua Magley brought him in on a single to left field. The Golden Eagles led 3-0 after the second inning. 
  • In the fourth inning the Crusaders were able to grab two runs in the fourth when Gordon Ferguson was hit by pitch to start the inning and that was followed by an error by the Cornerstone defense. Ryan Celmer was able to bring in two runs on a double to left field. 
  • In the fifth Landon Poll added an RBI single to left field to add another run to the Cornerstone lead. 
  • CU had a big eighth inning as they would bring in seven runs to give them a 11-2 lead with an inning to play. 
  • The Blue and Gold though would add a run in the top of the ninth when Marcus Cipriano would ground out to second base and bring in Kyle Aniol. 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • Crusader pitchers would tally 10 strikeouts throughout the game. Donovan Thacker would strike out five. 
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Kyle Aniol went three for four scoring a run in the ninth inning.
  • Ryan Celmer went one for three ashe would bring in two-runs on a double to left field.

GAME 2
TURNING POINT
  • A two-run Crusader eighth inning gave the Crusaders the lead, which was from a Staelgraeve home run and a Beadle single. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first four innings saw neither team being able to bring a run across the plate. 
  • The Crusaders brought the first run across in the fifth inning when Matt Staelgraeve hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Jace Matkin.
  • George Cutler would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth on a single through the left side for Cornerstone.
  • The top of the eighth inning saw the Crusaders retake the lead as Staelgraeve led off the inning with a home run to right field. Zachary Beadle would add on a second run in the inning on a single up the middle. 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • The Crusaders as a team hit for the cycle in the game with Ryan Celmer's double, Beadle's triple and Staelgraeve's home run.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Dusang pitched six innings while only allowing a single run, and allowed three hits and struck out six. 
  • Staelgraeve went two-for-two with a home run and two RBIs. 
  • Beadle added three hits with a triple and one RBI.
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will be back to the diamond tomorrow morning as they take on the Saints of Aquinas College for a doubleheader starting at 10 am.
