Crusaders pick up win in weekend finale

GEORGETOWN, Ky.- The Madonna University Crusaders stayed in Kentucky for their final game of the weekend against the Georgetown College Tigers. The Crusaders avoided the weekend sweep with the 9-2 win as they never trailed in the game. 

TURNING POINT
  • A two run first inning that the Crusaders were able to take advantage of a Tiger error and a walk to score. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kyle Aniol and Adrian Reed would both get a single in the top of the first to get it started for the Crusaders. Aniol would get home after an error by the Tigers third baseman. And following a bases loaded walk to Gordon Ferguson, Reed would score the second run of the inning. 
  • Steffen Dyl would lead off the second with a single, and would move to second on a stolen base. He would then score following a Zachary Beadle single. 
  • The Crusaders would be quiet until the fourth inning that saw Reed hit his first home run of the season to right field that also brought home Dyl.
  • The fifth inning saw the last time the Crusaders would score as they would bring home four runs. Noah Moore and Alex Garbacik started with a double and single respectively and then Gordon Ferguson would bunt that would load the bases for the Crusaders. A Jace Matkin double would bring home both Moore and Garbacik. Dyl and Aniol would both bring home runs with a single and a squeeze bunt respectively. 
  • The sole runs from the Tigers came in the sixth inning on a two run home run from the Georgetown second baseman. 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • 13: The Crusaders would get 13 hits in the afternoon including four extra base hits. 
  • 8: Madonna pitchers would strike out eight batters on the day and were led by Daniel Gore with four. 
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Reed went 2-5 in the afternoon with a home run and two runs scored with two runs batted in. 
  • Ferguson was 2-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.
  • Daniel Gore pitched six for the Crusaders giving up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will finally return home and open up their home schedule for the 2021 season when they will also open up conference play against Rochester University on Saturday March 20 with a 1 PM first pitch.
