ANN ARBOR, Mich. -  On Sunday, the Madonna University Men's Basketball team took down the Concordia University Cardinals on the road at Cardinal Field House, 76-63 behind senior Henry Speight and junior Mark Mettie.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders could not pull away from Concordia at any point in the first half. Speight and Mettie lead the team from the get-go heading into halftime with 12 and 10-points, respectively, as Madonna amassed a four-point advantage into the locker room.
  • Madonna launched an explosive second half start behind jumpers and free throw attempts by both Speight and Mettie cemented by a sophomore Devin Dunn three-pointer gave the Crusaders the edge down the stretch.
  • The largest lead grew to 16-points for Madonna with 10:58 to go with a free throw from Speight though the Cardinals would claw back to within nine but an authoritative dunk by Mettie and a jumper by senior Stephan Umfress would dash any hopes of a comeback for Concordia.
TURNING POINT
  • Madonna's lead inflated to a 16-point lead at the 10:58 mark, its largest of the game, where the Cardinals would never recover.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
  • Speight and Mettie each eclipsed the 20-point barrier with 23 and 22, respectively. Senior Noah Campbell, Dunn, and sophomore Ryan Nunn each tallied nine points apiece.
  • Mettie commanded 16 rebounds, 12 on defense, with four assists and four blocks to boot.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • 33: A previously highlighted mark was the Crusaders' rebounding efforts lead behind Mettie with 16, 12 of which on the defensive end. This propelled Madonna's 33 defensive rebounds in the contest as the squad held Concordia to only 11 second-chance points. Madonna had 41 rebounds in total.
  • 6-10: More of an interesting line, Madonna did not achieve any free throw opportunities in the first half, shooting 6-10 for 60% only in the second half.
UP NEXT
  • Madonna will defend home court on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 pm where it plays hosts to Lourdes University (Ohio).
