ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Madonna University women's basketball team traveled to Ann Arbor for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon that saw the Crusaders drop the game 76-57.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams were even throughout the first quarter as both teams defenses were solid and able to make some key defensive stops. April Hudelson and Megan Aho got the scoring started for Madonna with back to back layups. Over the next two minutes both teams would go scoreless until a Cardinal basket. Naomi Davis would give the Crusaders a lead. Hudelson would have back to back layups that would give the Crusaders a two-point lead at the break.
- The second quarter saw both offenses turn it up and get hot. Woodard had the hot hand for the Crusaders in the quarter as she went two of two from deep in the quarter. The two teams went back and forth the entire quarter as neither side was able to pull ahead. The Crusaders had a 7-0 in the middle of the quarter with baskets from Josie Pergentili and Woodard. The Crusaders final lead of the game came with 1:23 in the half. A 6-0 run at the end of the half gave the Cardinals a 3-point.
- The Cardinals were able to turn the offensive page in the second half as they were able to outscore the Crusaders 43-27. Davis and Paige Boden were the top scorers in the quarter for the Crusaders as they were able to get the game to within three. The Cardinals 15-4 run gave them the lead that would hold throughout the game. Woodard would hit a three to end the third.
- The fourth would start out as all Cardinals as they would open up with a 17-2 run. Aho, Pergentili, and Kennedy Carrier would end the game with an 11-2 run.
TURNING POINT
- A Cardinals 15-4 run late in the third quarter to extend the lead to double digits.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Aho was tied for the team lead with 13 points, eight rebounds and six steals in the afternoon.
- Woodard also added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- 28: The Crusaders were outscored in the paint by the Cardinals 44-28
- 35: Madonna was able to out rebound Concordia 35-31 while being led by Aho with eight and Hudelson with seven.
- 35.9: The Blue and Gold shot the ball at a 35.9% clip throughout the game.
