LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University Crusaders women's basketball team returned to the ACCU Arena on Wednesday night to face off against the Grey Wolves of Lourdes University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Baskets from Emily Pendred and April Hudelson put the Crusaders out to an early 4-0 lead, with which Lourdes responded with a 12-1 run over 3:13 minutes. Madonna would respond with a 9-3 run to come within one point at 15-14 with baskets from Paige Boden and Sharon Woodard. The Grey Wolves would hit a three with five seconds remaining to push the lead to four.
- Addie Conroy who ended the first with a three would open the second with another as the two teams would battle back and forth. Hudelson would hit a jumper at the 5:43 mark to bring the Crusaders to within four, but that would be the closest they would get for the remainder of the game, as Lourdes extended the lead to nine, in part from an 8-3 run over the last four minutes of the half.
- The third period saw good defense being played and runs creating offense for both sides. The Crusaders again would score the first four on baskets from Hudelson and Megan Aho, but Lourdes would respond with a 7-0 run. Madonna though would go on their own 6-2 run over the final 4:36 to comeback within eight.
- The fourth quarter would make the difference in the game with the grey Wolves winning the quarter by 10. Sarah Tanderys would hit a couple of big threes in the quarter. But hot free throw shooting extended the lead out of the Crusaders reach.
TURNING POINT
- A 27-17 fourth quarter that saw the single-digit lead turn into double-digits as Lourdes made good on 11 of their 12 free throws.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Boden had a solid night on both ends of the floor as she had a season-high 11 points, two rebounds, and two blocks.
- Aho had five points, five assists and six rebounds throughout the evening.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- 37: The Blue and Gold were edged out on rebounds by three total. They led the offensive rebounding 14-11, but ended up losing on the defensive side 29-23.
- 26: The Crusaders bench outscored the Grey Wolves by a score of 26-25.
- 10: Madonna was able to swipe the ball from the Grey Wolves 10 times as opposed to Lourdes' eight.
UP NEXT
- The Blue and Gold will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to go up against the No. 9 team in the country in Indiana Tech on Saturday February 13 with tipoff at 1 PM.
