Madonna Completes Sweep in Regular Season Finale

THE BASICS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Madonna University Men's Basketball team defeated Aquinas College (Mich.) at the Sturrus Center on Tuesday night to round out the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders kicked out to an early 8-0 lead behind sophomore Devin Dunn, junior Mark Mettie, and senior Noah Campbell before the Saints crept within two points at the 13:52 mark in the first. After that point Madonna was practically lights out, heading into halftime with 65.6% shooting from the field, 71.4% from the three-point arc for a 55-28 lead in the locker room. 
  • Both teams shot evenly throughout the final frame, Madonna reached a 20-plus point advantage as Speight lead the Crusaders with 11 points in the final half to seal the win and the season sweep over the Saints. 
TURNING POINT
  • Madonna stretched its lead to 30 points at the 4:51 point in the second half.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
  • Campbell hit the 24 point margin with sophomore Devin Dunn just behind in 16 and Speight with 15. Both Dunn and junior Mark Mettie handed out five assists through forty minutes
  • Senior Stephan Umfress grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, nine on the defensive end along with Mettie with seven himself
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • 41: The Crusaders notched a grand total of 41 rebounds, the highest of the season, behind Umfress, Mettie, and Speight to dominate the defensive end with 30
  • 84.6%: Clutch where it counts, Madonna shot 11-13 from the free throw line to aid in the win
  • 30: The 30 point lead Madonna inflated to is the largest its had all season
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will play in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday, February 25 as the No. 4 seed hosting the No. 5 seed Lourdes University (Ohio) at the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
