Women’s Basketball’s second half comeback falls short

THE BASICS

Score: Madonna University 48, Siena Heights University (Mich.) 58
Records: Madonna (2-12, 2-10), Siena Heights (12-4, 9-3)
Location: ACCU Arena at the PAAAC, Livonia, Mich.

LIVONIA, Mich. -  The Madonna University women's basketball team faced off against the Saints of Siena Heights University on Sunday afternoon to close out their 2020-21 home regular season schedule. The Crusaders made an attempt for a 17-point second half comeback, but the Saints were too much. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The Saints offense was solid from the start when they put up a 10-3 run to start the game. The Crusaders would go onto a 5-2 run to get the score back within four with baskets from Emily Pendred and April Hudelson. The Saints would respond with their own 12-2 run to end the quarter to give them the 13-point advantage at the quarter break. 
  • Megan Aho started the scoring in the second period with a jumper off of an Pendred offensive rebound. Both teams would trade baskets through out the second half of the period with Hudelson, Aho and Naomi Davis each scoring baskets. 
  • The second half saw the Crusaders attempt to gain some sort of momentum start flowing their way as they would hold Saints leading scorer to just two points in the period. Aho would once again start the period with a jumper before an 8-0 run by the Saints. Paige Boden would add an and-one basket that would jumpstart an 11-2 Crusader run to end the quarter as they would outscore the Saints by one. Scoring in the run was Davis, Boden, Aho and Kennedy Carrier
  • The final quarter once again saw the Crusaders take back control of the momentum as they would be able to bring the game to within six points in part to a 14-4 run that started and ended with Carrier points. The Saints though would make good on their end of game free throws and close out the game. 

TURNING POINT
  • 23-10 quarter for the Saints that gave them the advantage that they would throughout the game. 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
  • Aho contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, three steals and added two assists on the afternoon.  
  • Davis once again had a solid game with 10 points and added five rebounds. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • 14: The Crusaders would take advantage of the Saints 17 turnovers and score 14 points off of them. 
  • 10: The Crusaders would also add on 10 points on their second-chance shots on their nine offensive rebounds.  
  • 23: The Crusaders bench would once again come in handy as they would total 23 of the Crusaders 48 

UP NEXT
  • The Blue and Gold will close out their 2020-21 regular season with a trip to Grand Rapids as they will face off against Aquinas College on Tuesday February 23 with a 5:30PM tipoff.
