GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Madonna University women's basketball team traveled to Grand Rapids to wrap up their 2020-21 regular season against the Saints of Aquinas College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Megan Aho got the Crusaders off to a hot start as she made back-to-back layups to start the game. The Saints would respond with their own nine straight points. Both teams would then trade three point baskets. The Saints would end the quarter on a 6-3 run as Josie Piergentili would end the quarter with a three.
- The Saints would start the second period on an 8-2 run making good on four free throws, Kennedy Carrier would score the first basket for the Crusaders. Madonna would follow with their own 9-2 run that would bring them to within five. The run started with Sarah Tanderys first three of the quarter and ended with a Sharon Woodard layup, April Hudelson would add in four points in the run. Emily Pendred and Tanderys would end the half with five straight.
- A 11-2 run would open up the game to give the Saints a 12-point lead to start the half. Naomi Davis would score five of the six Crusaders final points in the quarter as she hit a three at the buzzer to get back within single-digits.
- Madonna came out ready in the fourth quarter to make a run at the game. Paige Boden and Davis got the scoring started to get the Crusaders back to within three. The Saints would score three straight to bring the lead back to six. Claire LeRoux hit a three to spark a late 6-0 run and Davis and Aho would add on to give the Crusaders a one-point lead. Over the next 1:56 Aquinas would use a 8-3 run in order to grab a four point lead.
TURNING POINT
- The Saints ended the game on a 6-0 run that gave them the lead and the 5-point win.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Davis led the Crusaders with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals.
- Huddelson was the top rebounder for the Crusaders with nine and also added five points and two steals.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- 40: Both teams ended up tied in the rebounding category, with the Crusaders winning the offensive boards 13-9.
- 24: The Crusaders bench scored 24 points throughout the game, with Davis leading with 14.
- 9: The Crusaders were able to force 11 Saints turnovers and adding in nine steals as they had three players with two steals apiece.
MILESTONE WATCH
- Paige Boden takes sole possession of third place on the all-time block list with 95.
