Crusaders Beat Cardinals for First Time Since 2019

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University Women's Basketball team has won four games in a row for the first time since the 2016-17 season thanks to a thrilling Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) victory against Concordia University Ann Arbor (Mich.), 74-64 on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite the final score, the Crusaders struggled early in the first quarter. It was a back and forth game for the first six minutes. However, at the 4:16 mark in the quarter, the Cardinals would go on a 14-5 run to close the first and take a 21-12 lead after one.

To start the second, the Crusaders would jump out the gates and go on an 8-0 run themselves to narrow the Cardinals lead to just one. After trading a couple of baskets, the Crusaders would finally grab the lead thanks to a Megan Aho layup. The Crusaders dominated the second quarter on both ends and outscored the Cardinals 20-6 to take a 32-27 lead at the half.

In the third, Sharon Woodard, Sarah Tanderys, and Paige Boden came alive this quarter. The Crusaders were able to get their biggest lead of the night going up 53-37, however, the Cardinals would finish the quarter strong and cut Madonna's lead to nine with just 10 seconds left.

The fourth quarter became competitive, you could feel the intensity in the gym as Concordia tried to make a comeback. Nonetheless, the Crusaders held strong and Naomi Davis went 7-7 from the free-throw line to ice the game.
