Women's Basketball Falls to Taylor to Start Season

LIVONIA, Mich..-- Madonna University's Women's Basketball team started their 2021-22 campaign last night with a home contest against Taylor University (Ind.) at the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena falling, 80-56. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Crusaders came out hot to start the season with Sharon Woodard getting the first basket of the season for the Crusaders. Madonna would lead 8-2 after the first five minutes of the first quarter. Megan Aho led the charge on the defensive side of the ball this period, coming away with 2 steals. Woodard would score seven in this quarter and the Crusaders would lead 19-7 after one. 

In the second, Woodard and Aho would get the first two scores of the second quarter to go up 13. After that, Taylor was able to get into a groove and started to get some stops and go on a run. The Trojans were able to cut the lead down to two points right before the half ended. With five seconds left Aho would throw it up to Sarah Tanderys, who then would step back behind the three point line and hit the jumper right as the buzzer sounded to go up 31-26.

In the third in when Taylor started to pull away. Over a span of five minutes, the Trojans would go on a 19-2 run and would not look back.  Taylor would outscore Madonna 26-15 in the third quarter and 28-10 in the fourth. Madonna showed a lot of positives in this match, but eventually fell 80-56. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 
  • Woodard was the leading scorer for Madonna finishing with 14 points.
  • Aho finished with seven points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals 
  • Claire LeRoux would finish the game with 11 points
  • Hudelson finished with eight points and seven rebounds 
  • Paige Boden was a great rim protector as she had three blocks

The Crusaders are back home this Thursday as they take on Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) with a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
