Volleyball Takes Two WHAC Wins on the Road

LIVONIA, Mich.-- Madonna University's Volleyball team etched out a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) wins Friday and Saturday on the road against Lourdes University (Ohio) and Siena Heights University (Mich.).

MADONNA 3, LOURDES 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

In this WHAC rematch, Madonna made quick work of the Gray Wolves starting with a kill from Jodie Kelly to allow the Crusaders to go on a 5-0 run. Jordyn Dawson and Jeada Porter were next in the scoring column where Madonna shutdown Lourdes to win the first set 25-11.

Kelly, Molly Miller, and a flurry of attacking errors by Lourdes handed Madonna the second set early on. Miller hit two kills in the last three points of the set to secure the 25-20 set win.

DJ Sargetn and Porter started things off in set three, staying afloat in many parts of the set as Miller sparked off four straight kills while Madonna set off a 9-0 run to steal the third set and the win 25-18.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Madonna stuffed seven blocks to Lourdes' one
  • Miller was the game's leader in kills with 14, Kelly right behind with 12
  • Dawson set up 33 assists

MADONNA 3, SIENA HEIGHTS 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kelly started off the day with three kills for Madonna as both teams went back-and-forth. A 5-0 Siena Heights run in the the latter half of the set put Madonna away 25-22. Though Madonna reeled off a 10-2 run to start the second set, SHU pulled within just a few points before the Crusaders' Sargent captured set two 25-18.

With the game at 1-1, Madonna found themselves up 6-5 in the first few moments of the third set behind Kelly. Kacie Stoneburner and Miller got in on the action before Sargent recorded a block to give Madonna a comfortable and, ultimately, the set win 25-17.

Siena Heights stole set four in extra serves 28-26 as the fifth set began. Down two points, Miller and back-to-back attacking errors by Miller put Madonna back on top by one, 8-7. The Saints dashed a 3-1 run before Kelly, a service ace from Olivia Sweeney, Porter, and Stoneburner pushed the Crusaders back ahead. Tied 14-14, Miller layed two back-to-back kills to win the game in the fifth set 16-14.

  • Kelly notched 28 kills in the win, Miller finished with 19
  • Dawson and Sweeney each recorded 57 assists and 29 digs, respectively
