Crusaders Close Door on Wolverines in WHAC Midweek Showdown

LIVONIA, Mich.-- On Wednesday, Madonna University's Volleyball team once again dominated home court at the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena with a 3-0 sweep over nearby Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opponent University of Michigan Dearborn.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Madonna jumped out to a quick 14-6 lead behind Jodie Kelly's kills, a few attacking errors by the Wolverines, and a few Molly Miller service aces. The lead continued to inflate as Kelly and Kacie Stoneburner sent the ball rocketing into the floor that would send a message to UM Dearborn that the first set was Madonna's 25-14.

The second set was the same for the Crusaders. A dominating start by the serve of Olivia Sweeney along with a kill from Joella Griner allowed Madonna to stay afloat early on. Madonna continued to bite out chunks of points in small runs from Dearborn attacking errors and a few points by Miller. In the final moments, it was Jaeda Porter who put away the Wolverines in set two 25-15.

The third set, however, was much more of a fight from both teams. UM Dearborn found itself above 10-7 before Porter forced a tie at 13-13. At 19-17, Madonna turned on the finisher with Miller, DJ Sargent, and three-straight kills by Kelly to hold a slight 22-21 lead. A Wolverine score knotted things up as Kelly and Porter went back-to-back at 24-22 forcing a flutter of timeouts from the visiting bench. Porter once again secured the finisher.
