Crusaders Earn First WHAC Win

THE BASICS

LIVONIA, Mich. -  The Madonna University Men's Basketball team rebounded from a midweek loss to command a 10-point home win Friday afternoon against University of Northwestern Ohio 78-68 at the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Henry Speight topped the scoring column for Madonna early on in the first half with 13 while junior Mark Mettie stuck around with nine first half points as well. 
  • Coming out of halftime, Mettie grabbed the first eight points for Madonna before Speight himself went on a 8-0 run early in the second period. At the 7:20 point, Madonna lead by as many as 23 points and cruised its way to the first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win. 
TURNING POINT
  • A three-point dagger with 47 seconds left to go in the first half by sophomore Ryan Nunn stretched the Warriors lead to nine at the break.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
  • Speight followed up his 31-point performance on Wednesday to shoot lights-out on Friday with 23 to lead the team. Mettie and Nunn each tallied 17 a piece to tie for second.
  • Mettie and Speight also dominated the boards with eight and seven rebounds each, respectively. Speight also notched four takeaways through 40 minutes.  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Whole Second Half: The Crusaders improved shooting from the first half to the second, inflating from a 45.6% to 50% from the field, 40% to 60% from three, and 42.86% to 58.33% at the free-throw line. 
  • 17: Madonna also gave themselves opportunities with 17 second-chance points compared to the Racers' nine.
  • 31: The final notable stat came off of turnovers. Madonna reached a grand total of 38 points off of turnovers through the entire game compared to UNOH's 12.

  • The Crusaders will have a short rest this evening and will travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan to do battle with Cornerstone University at 3:00 pm. .
