LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University Women's Lacrosse team returned home for the first time in the 2020 campaign and did not disappoint as they picked up a win over first year program William Penn University. The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Statesmen made a comeback to make it a 5-4 lead for Madonna at the half. The Crusaders came out ready in the second half as they outscored William Penn 4-1 to hold onto the 9-5 victory.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The first 10 minutes of the match was back and forth passing from both sides but at the 19:34 mark a cutting Arianna Rivera got a pass from Brittney Leist to go up 1-0.Â
- It would not take long, only 10 seconds, for the Crusaders to score again as they controlled the draw and ran it down the field and was able to get it to Courtney Hoeland who was fouled. On the free position attempt she passed it to Brittney Leist who was able to beat the goalie with a quick shot.Â
- Another Crusader goal just 40 seconds later from Taylor Vitori gave the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. The Statesmen would answer back with a goal from Mia Arnone at the 11:28 mark.
- The Crusaders were able to add two more goals within three minutes of each other off the sticks of Madeleine Caswell and a woman-up opportunity from Brittney Leist.
- To end the half William Penn brought the score to within one as they rattled off three straight in the last 3:26 to make the score 5-4 at the buzzer.
- Starting the second half the Crusaders added on two goals within the first six and a half minutes from Caswell and Rivera.Â
- Neither attacks were able to find the net for the next 19 minutes but Madison Kadwell ended that drought at the 4:38 mark followed by Valarie Patterson getting her first goal of the year. The Statesman ended the game with a goal with a minute and a half remaining for the final score of 9-5.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Crusaders outshot the Statesmen by a total of 31-24
- The Blue and Gold were 18-20 on clears for the afternoon which was good for 90%
- Madonna picked up 30 ground balls as opposed to 23 for the Statesmen
- Neither team could take a definitive lead on draw controls as they both had eight.

- The Crusaders won't have much time off as they return tomorrow Saturday, March 7 with an 11 AM Faceoff against Saint Ambrose University.Â
