GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Madonna University Crusaders women's basketball team went across the state for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup against the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University. The Crusaders were in control from the get-go as they went on to force 22 turnovers, and shot 50 percent from the floor, in the 89-72 victory to earn their second conference victory of the season.
The last time the Crusaders won in Grand Rapids was in the 2015-2016 season when they had a one point victory over the Golden Eagles.
The Crusaders record is now 4-19 and 2-13 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles record improves to 3-22 and 1-14 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Madonna started off strong as both teams went back-and-forth scoring as they were making shots inside and out as they went up 10-7 on a couple of baskets from Sydney Brown, Victoria Guardiola, and Megan Aho. The Crusaders saw their first deficit at the 2:24 mark, Following that the Crusaders went on a 9-3 run to end the quarter 24-19. Leading the Crusaders in the quarter were Brown and Kennedy Carrier.
- The Crusaders once again started out the quarter on fire as they jumped out in front with a 10-2 run that put them up by 13 with 5:30 remaining. Sydney Brown then ended a 7-0 for the Golden Eagles with a quick five points. MU was able to extend their 10 point lead into a 17 point lead on 3 three's from Brown and Naomi Davis. Leading the Crusaders at the half was Guardiola and Brown.
- In the third quarter, the Madonna defense struggled as this was the only quarter they dropped although the Crusader offense would not give up the lead. Paige Boden had a couple of solid layups with Guardiola making the most of her shots from the outside. Claire LeRoux added a couple of jumpers to keep the lead extended. Leading the Crusaders in the quarter was Guardiola and Paige Boden.
- The fourth quarter started slow for the Crusaders, but the offense was able to get it going as they had a 12-6 run in the middle of the final period that helped them extend the lead all the way out to 15. With the Golden Eagles fouling in the final minutes the Crusaders were able to hit their free throws to seal the game. Second half leaders were Guardiola and Aho
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- 32: Guardiola led the team on the night with 24 points, seven steals and seven assists.
- 37: The Crusaders finished with 37 rebounds including 10 offensive and 27 defensive rebounds, leading the Crusaders was Aho with 9 rebounds. While the Golden Eagles recorded 31 rebounds including 9 offensive and 22 defensive and were led by Rebekah Crosby with 16 rebounds.
- 22: The Blue and Gold created 22 turnovers on the night and were lead in steals by Guardiola (7) and Aho (6). And had 23 points off of those turnovers.
- 4: The Crusaders had four players in double figures with Guardiola (24), Brown (17), Kennedy Carrier (17), Aho (16).
MILESTONE WATCH:
- Paige Boden is still tied, with Becca Sabol, for the season record for most blocks in a season with 57.
- With seven steals today Guardiola tied her for the 10th most in a single game.
