Saints topple @MUCrusadersWBB with hot shooting and defense

ADRIAN, Mich. – Madonna University Crusaders women's basketball team traveled to Adrian on Wednesday night to go up against No. 22 Saints from Siena Heights University in a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup. The Saints used a - 51-24 second and third quarter made the difference in the game. The Saints shot over 50 percent for the game that ended in a 92-64 Saints win.

The Crusaders record is now 3-19 and 1-13 in the conference, while the Saints record improves to 21-2 and 13-1 in conference play.


HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams came out with some hot shooting as the Crusaders were able to take a 10-8 lead in the first five minutes on a couple of three-point baskets from Sydney Brown and Victoria Guardiola. A 6-2 run for MU gave them a 16-10 advantage, but the Saints followed up with a 7-1 run to end the quarter gave SHU a two-point advantage at the end of the quarter. Leading the Crusaders was Guardiola with seven points.
  • The middle two quarters is when the Saints were able to build on their lead. SHU's defense stiffened up and only allowed seven points and baskets from Brown and Guardiola. The difference in the second quarter was the Saints ending on a 16-3 run. Leading the Crusaders was Brown with five.
  • Coming out of the halftime break the Madonna offense came out hot but so did the Saint's. Paige Boden tied the school record in blocks in a season at the 7:12 mark in the quarter. The crusaders had a quick 8-3 run in the quarter on five points from Megan Aho. Both teams were able to score twice within the last thirty seconds. Leading the Crusaders was Brown and Aho both with seven.
  • Over the first 3:45, the Crusaders went on a 10-4 run with baskets coming from Claire LeRoux, Aho, and Brown. Both teams went back and forth in the scoring column for the remainder of the quarter. Leading the Crusaders was LeRoux with 13 points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • 13: Brown led the team on the night with 19 points, two steals and five rebounds.
  • 29: The Crusaders finished with 29 rebounds including 12 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds, leading the Crusaders was Emily Pendred with 9 rebounds. While the Gray Wolves recorded 44 rebounds including 14 offensive and 30 defensive and were led by Peyton Banks with 11 rebounds.
  • 11:  The Blue and Gold created 11 turnovers from steals on the night with Aho and LeRoux both having three steals.
  • 18: The Blue and Gold were able to create points off of turnovers as they tallied up 18 points in that category. 
MILESTONE WATCH:
  • With two blocks tonight Paige Boden has tied the season record for most blocks in a season with 57.
