LIVONIA, Mich. - The 22nd-ranked Madonna University men's basketball team squandered a 14-point second-half lead in an 87-77 overtime loss to No. 13  Lourdes University in a battle for first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. 

The Crusaders set the tone early as Joshua Reynolds and Dwight Burton converted 3-pointers in the first three possessions and propelled MU to an early 10-0 lead. Lourdes was able to cut the advantage to two, midway through the half, but Madonna used another 10-0 run, this time getting six points from the free throw line, to push the lead to 12, 40-28 with 2:29 before the half. The Gray Wolves closed the half on a 6-2 run to make it 42-34 at the break.

Madonna scored the first six points in the second half, highlighted by a Mark Mettie alley-oop dunk, to take a 48-34 lead. However, over the next eight minutes, Madonna scored just five points as the Blue and Gold went 1-for-8 from the field and had two turnovers while also going 3-for-6 at the charity stripe. Lourdes used that time to take a 54-53 lead with 7:51 to play, tied the game at 70 with seven seconds left then outscored MU 17-7 in the extra period for the final score. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Burton led all scorers with 23 points and added four rebounds and four assists while Reynolds finished with 19 points and four assists
• Henry Speight added 10 points and nine rebounds while Caleb Drumm also had 10 points
• Both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field, but Lourdes went 14-of-16 from the free-throw line while MU finished 15-of-22
• After outscoring Lourdes 48-34 over the first 24:06 of the contest, the Gray Wolves outscored MU 53-29 over the final 20:52
