Turning Point: 16-4 UNOH run to close the first half
LIMA, Ohio - The 22nd-ranked Madonna University men's basketball team struggled at both ends of the floor in a second consecutive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference loss on Saturday, a 75-66 setback against the University of Northwestern Ohio at the Garage.
UNOH raced out to an early 18-9 advantage, but the Crusaders responded with a 16-4 run, highlighted by a Mark Mettie dunk and six points from Henry Speight, to take a 25-22 lead with 6:46 left in the first half. Unfortunately, the Blue and Gold struggled to finish the period as the Racers used a 16-4 run of their own to take a 38-29 lead at the break.
The Racers built an 11-point lead in the second half before Joshua Reynolds caught fire and helped bring MU to within two points, 57-55, with 8:02 left, but Madonna was unable to get any closer the rest of the way and the home team converted free throws down the stretch for the final margin, 75-66.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Reynolds led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed six rebounds while three others, Dwight Burton (13), Mettie (12) and Speight (10) also tallied double-digit points
- Mettie recorded a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds, his second such game of the season and second in four games
- UNOH turned 17 MU turnovers into 20 points and held the Crusaders to 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the field, 5-of-26 (19.2%) from the 3-point arc and 13-of-16 (81.3%) from the free-throw line

- In December, the Crusaders recorded the largest margin of victory in the series, a 31-point, 94-63 victory
NOEL'S NOTIONS
- "As a team, we lack the consistency to defend and take care of the ball well enough to carry us through a tough shooting night like tonight. To win on the road, you need to have timely stops on defense, especially when shots aren't falling as you are used to. In the end, our turnovers, and the points they scored off them, were too much to overcome. I was unable to have our team prepared for the challenges that UNOH presented tonight. We will have to be much better moving forward if we hope to be well-positioned for tournament play." - Head Coach Noel Emenhiser
MILESTONE WATCH
- Madonna is seven wins shy of 300 in the program's history
- Reynolds passed Dan Kurtinaitis for ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,379 points
- Burton sits two points shy of Aaron Cox for 11th on the all-time scoring list with 1,247 points
