@MUCrusadersVB turn back Saints in WHAC opener

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University volleyball team opened the 2019 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season with a 3-0 (25-16, 31-29, 25-13) win over Siena Heights University inside the MU Activities Center on Wednesday night. 

The win sends MU to 9-4 on the year while the Saints fall to 2-5.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The Blue and Gold got off to a slow start as the Saints took an early lead, 7-5, before the Crusaders turned up the heat. A Ryleigh Jacobs ace and three kills from Tauri Hintz highlighted a 7-1 run by the home team. After SHU gut the lead back to one, the Crusaders won 9-of-10 points to take the 21-12 lead and never looked back. 
  • It was an intense second set that defined the match as the teams traded the lead before MU took a 24-20 advantage. The Saints scored four straight to tie the game and the teams went back and forth until a Jodie Kelly kill and a pair of Saints' attack errors gave the Blue and Gold a 31-29 win. 
  • Having built momentum from set two, the Crusaders dominated the finale as MU scored the first four points, 7-of-8 and 20-of-26 points in the eventual win. Ryan Castle was the service star as she tallied a pair of aces and Joella Griner won the match with a kill for the 25-13 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • 2 - A pair of Crusaders, Kelly (19) and Erica LaBaere (10) tallied double-digit kills
  • .313-.019 - Madonna hit .313 in the win while SHU hit just .019
  • 34 - Betsy Cook finished with 34 assists for the Blue and Gold
  • 12/10 - Olivia Sweeney paced the MU defense with 12 digs while Kelly added 10
