Hintz leads @MUCrusadersVB past Golden Eagles

LIVONIA, Mich. - he Madonna University volleyball team, led by a career-night from Tauri Hintz, faced off with Cornerstone University at the MU Activities Center on Wednesday night, winning the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest in four sets. 

Madonna is now 10-4 with a WHAC record of 2-0, while the Golden Eagles fall to 4-5 on the year and 1-1 in league play. 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Set One: The Crusaders came out in full force earning their first two points with a missed serve and a tip by Jodie Kelly. After the teams traded side-outs, the Crusaders took the lead for good on a forceful kill from Kelly to make it 9-8. The Blue and Gold went on to win the set 25-20.
  • Set Two: A slow start for the Crusaders led to a 5-0 lead for Cornerstone to begin the second set and forced and early timeout for Madonna. . As the Crusaders worked to earn points, both Kelly and Hintz were in the middle of the rally. The Blue and Gold battled to within one, 24-23, but the Golden Eagles were able to hang on for the 25-23 win.
  • Set three: The teams traded side-outs early in the pivotal third set and it was the Crusaders who finally asserted themselves as they used three-straight kills from Hintz to break a 5-5 tie and Hintz, Kelly, Karolina Noszczyk and Erica LaBaere all added key kills en route to a dominant 20-11 lead. The Golden Eagles chipped away, but MU sealed the 25-16 win on a LaBaere kill. 
  • Set Four: Madonna set the tone early in the decisive game on an ace by Olivia Sweeny and a kill from Kelly to go up 2-0 and take five of the first seven points. Cornerstone answered with a 12-3 run to take a 12-8 lead, but MU didn't back down and a trio of kills from Hintz, Noszczyk and LaBaere gave the Blue and Gold the lead for good en route to a 25-20 win.

  • 16 - Tauri Hintz Tallied a career-high 16 kills and led MU with a .379 attack percentage
  • .269-.163 - Madonna led Cornerstone in attack percentage 
  • 49 - Betsy Cook finished with 49 assists
  • 19 - Kelly finished with a team-best 19 kills and added 11 digs
  • 17 - Sweeney led MU with 17 digs
