FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament championship, a best-of-three series hosted by Indiana Tech University saw the Warriors take game one in an 18-9 slugfest. Despite a strong offensive performance by the Crusaders, the potent Warrior bats could not be stopped as they posted 21 hits and 18 runs in the game.

GAME 1: Madonna 9, Indiana Tech 18

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Warriors quickly jumped out to a 9-1 lead through four innings, chasing Victor Mencotti after 1.2 innings

  • Noah Renaud singled with one out as Frankie Lucska stepped to the plate and smacked the fourth pitch he saw over the right center wall to limit the deficit to 9-3

  • Three batters later, with Nick Sykes on first base, Gordon Ferguson hit the second home run of the inning to bring the score within four runs

  • A two-RBI single by Lucska, a second home run for Ferguson, and an RBI walk by Stephen Parker would round out the scoring for the Blue and Gold, scoring nine runs in the contest

  • The Warrior offense scored in all eight innings that they came to the plate, highlighted by a six run second inning and a five run seventh inning

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

  • MU was outhit 21-12 and committed the only error of the ballgame

  • Jalen Thomas, Lucska and Ferguson each hit home runs in the contest

  • Thomas, Renaud, Lucska, Sykes and Ferguson recorded all 12 hits for MU

  • Five different pitchers saw the mound as Ross Rickel replaced Mencotti before Ryan Mount, Greg Goodbred and Joe Wozniak were called upon

  • There were seven total home runs in the contest
