LIVONIA, Mich.- The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament Livonia pod, hosted by Madonna University, got underway on Thursday morning and saw No. 6 seed Cornerstone University defeat No. 3 seed Lawrence Technological University 3-2 in the first game. The second-seeded Crusaders then eliminated the Blue Devils with an 8-1 victory and moved one game away from advancing to the WHAC Championship series beginning on Monday with a 5-3 win over the Golden Eagles.
GAME 1: Madonna 8, Lawrence Tech 1
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- While the offense posted eight runs on 10 hits, Jack Ferguson was the story as the junior left-hander tossed a game as he allowed one run on six hits with nine strikeouts in a complete-game victory
- After a quiet three frames, the Crusaders broke loose in the fourth for six runs on five hits. The momentum in the game changed on a pivotal catcher's interference call as Nick Sykes popped out to second, but an interference call placed him on first and moved Frankie Lucska to second with one out. JAlane Thomas singled up the middle for a 2-0 lead, Gordon Ferguson followed a Noah Moore walk with another RBI single and an Alex Nicholson double made it 4-0. Adrian Reed added to the lead with a two-run single for the six-run lead.
- G. Ferguson added insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run home run
- A pair of hits in the ninth brought in the lone Blue Devils run

- 2: J. Ferguson allowed just two runners to touch third base in the contest; Lucska and Reed each tallied a pair of hits with the latter driving in two
- 3: G. Ferguson led the offense with three hits as he finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored
- 4: The Blue and Gold drew four walks and struck out four times
- 91: J. Ferguson tossed 91 pitches as he faced 32 batters and induced 12 groundouts to five flyouts

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Nicholson came up big in the eighth as he delivered a go-ahead RBI single
- Cornerstone scored a run in the second and two in the sixth
- Noah Renaud drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and scored on an Reed groundout
- With rain coming down, the Crusaders got to the Golden Eagles' bullpen as Lucska doubled with one out and Sykes reached on catcher's interference. An error with the bases loaded off the bat of Renaud tied the game and Nicholson then singled for the 4-3 lead. Reed followed with another hit for the final margin
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- 10: Cornerstone stranded 10 runners on base and outhit the Crusaders 11-5
- 9: The Blue and Gold struck out nine times to just four walks and left eight runners on base
- 2: Reed paced the offense with two hits and drove in a pair
- 6: Victor Mencotti got a no decision as he allowed three runs on 11 hits with two walks and six strikeouts over six innings
- 5: John Beuckeleare pitched two scoreless innings with a walk and two strikeouts to earn his five win; Greg Goodbred also pitched a perfect inning in the contest with one strikeout
