LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University baseball team was not able to pick up the sweep of Cleary University on Thursday afternoon as they dropped game one of the doubleheader 7-4 before winning the nightcap by a score of 6-2. The Crusaders fall to 12-6 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Cougars improve to 4-14 in conference.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

GAME ONE: MU 4, CU 7

• The Cougars put up four runs in the first two innings, leading by a score of 4-1 entering the third

• An error and a pair of fielder's choices sent Noah Renaud around the bases, narrowing the gap 4-2 before another Cleary error in the fourth led to an MU run and made it 4-3

• The Cougars continued to put runs on the board as they extended their lead in to 6-3 in the fourth and added an insurance run in the eighth that would prove too steep for the Crusaders to come back from

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

• MU was outhit 9-6 by the Cougars

• Adrian Reed was the lone Crusader with multiple hits while Renaud, Frankie Lucska, Jalen Thomas, and Gordon Ferguson each added a hit

• Ray Richard suffered the loss, lasting one inning and allowing four earned runs with three walks

• Ethan Whitcomb was first out of the bullpen before handing the ball off to Greg Goodbred and Victor Mencotti

GAME TWO: MU 6, CU 2

• The Crusaders put up two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Thomas and a double by Nick Sykes

• Lucska homered in the third to extend the MU lead to 3-0 before smashing a two-run double in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 6-1

• The Cougars were not able to mount a comeback despite scoring in the bottom of the eighth

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY

• MU outhit the Cougars 10-7 and both teams committed a single error

• Lucska paced the offense with a 3-for-4 day that included three runs scored and three RBI

• Sykes also collected three hits and an RBI while Ferguson notched two hits in the contest

• Ross Rickel earned the win with five innings pitched, allowing just one earned run

• Daniel Gore entered the game for two innings of relief before John Beuckeleare closed the door in the final two innings

• The Crusaders return to action as they travel to Sylvania, Ohio to face off with Lourdes University. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
