Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Madonna University baseball team used two stellar pitching performances from Jack Ferguson and Victor Mencotti to earn the sweep of Concordia University on Monday afternoon. The Crusaders won 4-0 in game one before a hard fought 2-1 victory in the nightcap, combining for 24 strikeouts in the doubleheader. The Blue and Gold improve to 22-11 and 4-0 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference while the Cardinals fall to 19-10 and 3-3 in WHAC play.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

GAME ONE: MU 4, CUAA 0

  • A pitchers duel between Ferguson and Jack Clark saw both teams scoreless through four innings

  • Jerad Dokey led the fifth inning off with a single before advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Gordon Ferguson. Noah Moore also singled as Adrian Reed stepped to the plate and smacked a 2 RBI double, putting the Crusaders ahead 2-0

  • The Crusaders added two insurance runs in seventh as Stephen parker and Frankie Lucska each knocked in an RBI to extend the lead to 4-0

  • J. Ferguson continued to dominate through the eighth before handing the ball over to John Beuckeleare who shut the door for MU.

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

  • MU outhit the Cardinals 8-6 and did not commit any errors

  • J. Ferguson was the star of the game, pitching eight innings and allowing just five hits with nine strikeouts and no runs allowed

  • Parker recorded the only multi-hit game for MU, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI

  • Lucska, Jalen Thomas, Noah Renaud, Dokey, Moore, and Reed recorded the other hits for the Crusaders

GAME TWO: MU 2, CUAA 1

  • The Crusaders once again struck first, this time in the sixth inning as Renaud singled and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher. After a Thomas intentional walk, Renaud advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on the throwing error by the catcher

  • MU added an insurance run in the eighth as Thomas scored thanks to a two-out error by the CUAA second baseman

  • The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one run on four hits but left three runners on base

  • Bueckeleare once again was first out of the pen, this time earning the four-out save as he allowed just two hits and one walk to preserve the victory

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY

  • MU recorded 10 hits compared to the Cardinals 6, although CUAA committed three costly errors

  • Mencotti recorded 13 strikeouts in his 7.2 innings of work, allowing just one run and four hits

  • Four Crusaders recorded two hits but neither run was earned so no RBI were recorded

  • Beuckeleare earned his fourth save of the season

  • The Crusaders will return to Ilitch Ballpark today, Apr. 2, for a doubleheader with University of Michigan-Dearborn at 1:00 p.m.
