Livonia, Mich. - The Madonna University baseball team dropped a pair of high scoring games to the University of Michigan - Dearborn on tuesday afternoon at Ilitch Ballpark. The Crusaders dropped game one 11-9 before losing the nightcap 8-4, dropping their record to 22-13 and 4-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Wolverines improve to 6-2 in conference play.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

GAME ONE: MU 9, UMD 11

  • The Wolverines jumped out to an early 3-1 lead through three innings before the Crusaders evened the game at three thanks to a double by Noah Moore and a two-out single by Adrian Reed.

  • The UMD offense was relentless, scoring three more runs in the next two innings, claiming a 6-5 lead through the seventh inning

  • An pair of errors by the Wolverine shortstop and third baseman plated two unearned runs for MU that knotted the score at seven runs apiece

  • A four-run bottom of the eighth for the Wolverines was too much to come back from as the Blue and Gold were able to put two runs up in the ninth but could not overcome the late deficit

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

  • MU was outhit 14-10 in the contest and committed two errors compared to five for the Wolverines

  • Stephen Parker was the lone Crusader with multiple hits

  • Reed, Alex Nicholson, Jalen Thomas and Moore collected the RBI for the Crusaders

  • Daniel Gore lasted 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs and one walk while striking out five

  • Ross Rickel was first out of the pen before handing the ball over to Joe Wozniak who suffered the loss

GAME TWO: MU 4, UMD 8

  • The Crusaders found themselves trailing 6-0 after making three errors and allowing five hits in the bottom of the third inning

  • A single and stolen base by Thomas set the stage for Frankie Lucska to knock in the first RBI of the game for MU in the top of the sixth inning

  • Two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth increased the lead to 8-1 for UMD

  • The Blue and Gold tried to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth thanks to a double by Matt Staelgraeve who eventually scored on a wild pitch but it was not enough to complete the comeback

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY

  • MU was once again outhit by the Wolverines 9-7 and committed three errors

  • Staelgraeve paced the offense going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored

  • Thomas also collected two hits and scored once in the loss

  • Five Crusaders took the mound in the contest but Greg Goodbred suffered his third loss of the season while Ryan Mount, Kevin Smith Jr., Ray Richard and Ethan Whitcomb followed
