GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the first time in nearly two years the second-ranked Madonna University men's lacrosse team has two regular season losses and are not in first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference after a 14-12 loss to No. 6 Aquinas College at AQ Athletic Field on Saturday.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Crusaders continue to be without the services of 2018 NAIA Player of the Year Cole Gingell who has missed the past seven games due to injury
- Jake Hwier fed Anthony Salamone for the games first goal and Aquinas tied the game three minutes later. After Tyler Kilar and the Saints traded goals Vince Floro and Ryan Flaherty put Madonna up 4-2 through a quarter of play.
- The Saints used three goals in the second to take the lead before Salamone again found the back of the net to tie the score at 5. The home team added a tally with 38 seconds left before the half for the 6-5 lead.
- The Saints used a 3-2 third quarter to build a two-goal lead. A pair of Salamone goals opened the fourth to tie the score before the home team went back ahead two with 9:42 to play.
- Flaherty, Floro and Kilar added goals over the next seven minutes to take a 12-11 lead at the 2:53 mark, but three Saints goals, which included one with four seconds to play, gave the No. 6 team the 14-12 upset win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- 44(24)-32(18): The Blue and Gold ttok 44 shots and put 24 on goal while Aquinas attempted 32 and put 18 on frame
- 20-29: Aquinas won the face-off battle as they took 20-of-29, a rare feat against the Crusaders
- 5: Ian Rush led the team with five ground balls and added an assist
- 4: Hwier and Abe Khoury each finished with four caused turnovers with the former also adding an assist while Salamone led the Crusaders with four points on four goals
- 3: Connor Wright tallied three caused turnovers while Flaherty finished with three points (3 g)
