LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Madonna University baseball team claimed the Warner University Tournament championship with a 3-2 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday afternoon at Royals Stadium. The Crusaders finish the tournament with a 4-1 record, falling only to NAIA No. 10 St. Thomas, improving their season record to 13-11.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • MU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as Noah Renaud was hit by a pitch before Adrian Reed reached base on a fielding error by the opposing shortstop. Following a wild pitch that advanced both runners, Alex Garbacik singled to left field that scored both Renaud and Reed.

  • The Cougars narrowed the gap in the third, scoring a run thanks to a sacrifice fly

  • Frankie Lucska extended the Crusaders lead on a fielder's choice that scored Joey Pejuan, who had doubled two at-bats earlier

  • The Cougars scored in the sixth and threatened in the seventh, but could not mount a comeback against the Crusaders bullpen

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

  • MU was outhit 8-7 in the contest and committed three errors compared to two by the Cougars

  • Pejuan and Garbacik paced the Blue and Gold offense, combining for a 4-for-5 day with one run scored and one RBI

  • Ross Rickel picked up the victory for the Crusaders, throwing five innings and allowing just one run (unearned) while striking out four Cougar hitters

  • Daniel Gore was first out of the bullpen, pitching the sixth inning and allowing a run before Greg Goodbred entered for the seventh inning and shut the door to solidify the victory
