FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Madonna University baseball team used 17 runs off of 17 hits to sweep the doubleheader against the University of Saint Francis on Tuesday afternoon in Fort Wayne. The two victories improve the Crusaders to 16-11 on the season while the Cougars fall to 6-14.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

GAME ONE: MU 4, USF 0

  • MU struck first as Frankie Lucska stepped to the plate with two outs and blasted an 0-0 pitch over the right field wall that scored Gordon Ferguson, who had doubled the previous at-bat.

  • After a scoreless bottom half of the third inning by Ross Rickel, the Crusaders added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning as they once again rallied with two outs. Stephen Parker and Noah Moore both singled before Adrian Reed doubled to right center field, scoring both Parking and Moore for a 4-0 lead

  • The MU bullpen shut down the Cougar offense the rest of the way, allowing just one hit in the remaining four innings

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

  • MU outhit the Cougars 7-4, led by a 2-hit effort by Parker

  • Five other Crusaders recorded hits in the contest as Lucska and Reed each recorded two RBI

  • Rickel lasted four innings, giving up just three hits while striking out four Cougar batters

  • Joe Wozniak and Victor Mencotti each pitched an inning before John Beuckeleare closed the game in the seventh to seal the victory

GAME TWO: MU 13, USF 9

  • Much like game one, the Crusaders struck first thanks to a Noah Renaud single that brought around Gordon Ferguson

  • After Saint Francis scored two in the bottom half of the inning, MU responded with a 7-run second inning that extended their lead to 8-2 thanks to three hits and three errors by the Cougar defense

  • A Joey Pejuan single to left field and an error by the Cougar third baseman brought around two insurance runs for the Blue and Gold, putting MU ahead 10-2 in the third

  • A three-run bottom half narrowed the gap to 10-5 before two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth put the game out of reach for the Cougars by a score of 13-9.

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY

  • MU once again outhit the Cougars 10-9, also winning the defensive battle as the Crusaders committed two errors and the Cougars committed eight

  • Six Crusaders recorded hits in the contest as Renaud, Parker, Jerad Dokey and Kyle Aniol all finished the day with two hits

  • Five Crusaders recorded at least one RBI as Renaud led the team with three

  • Six MU pitchers made an appearance in the contest as Greg Goodbred got the start and lasted three innings with four earned runs and two walks
