LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University women's basketball team was not able to improve their winning streak to three games as they dropped a heartbreaker to the University of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday night at the MU Activities Center.

The Crusaders had a strong start on both ends of the court, jumping out to a 15-10 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter. Sydney Brown took control offensively in the second quarter, scoring six of Madonna's 11 points, propelling the Blue and Gold to a 26-22 lead at halftime. The Racers reclaimed their first lead since the first minute of the first quarter at the 6:09 mark of the third, going on a  8-3 run to put them ahead 31-29. As the two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, it was the Crusaders finishing on top by a score of 41-37. In a fourth quarter saw three lead changes and come down to the final buzzer, the Racers were able to hold off the Crusaders for a 53-50 victory.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

  • Brown led all Crusaders in both points and steals with 23 and 7, respectively. Hannah Reinhold was the only other MU player with double digit points as she dropped 13 and added one steal and two rebounds. Emily Huff came down with a team high seven boards in the contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Crusaders shot 34.5 percent (19-55) from the field, 15.4 percent (2-13) from beyond the arc, and 58.8 percent (10-17) from the free throw line. The Racers shot 36.2 percent (21-58) from field goal range, 20 percent (2-10) from deep, and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the free throw line.

  • The Crusaders got out-rebounded 29-46 and lost the battle in the paint giving up 32 points compared to their 22.

  • The Crusaders finish out conference play with a three game away stand, starting at NAIA Receiving Votes University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
