LIVONIA, Mich. - Joshua Reynolds and
Henry Speight executed a 1-in-100 play to perfection to force overtime and the ninth-ranked Madonna University men's basketball team used a 9-0 run in the extra period to upset top-ranked Spring Arbor University 93-91 inside a packed MU Activities Center on Thursday night.
Baskets from Dwight Burton, Speight and Reynolds gave the Crusaders (3-2) an early 6-0 lead and helped the Blue and Gold to an 18-6 advantage. It was a half of runs as Spring Arbor (3-2) responded with a 34-12 run to take a 10-point, 40-30, lead. A Speight layup ended the run and a Burton layup and dunk from Reynolds helped the Crusaders to a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to six, 42-36, at the break.
The Blue and Gold began the second half on fire as they used a 15-4 run, highlighted by seven points from Burton, to take a 51-46 advantage. Spring Arbor kept the game close the rest of the way and had a 78-75 lead with seven seconds to play. The Cougars elected to foul Speight before he could attempt a 3-pointer, sending him to the line for two shots, down three. He made the first then an intentional miss went directly to Reynolds who was wide open at the rim to send the game to overtime.
Spring Arbor scored the first three points of overtime before the Crusaders took over. Caleb Drumm drilled a three to even the score at 81, KJ Sayer converted a pair of free throws and Speight and Burton followed with layups to cap a 9-0 run to make it 87-81. The teams traded baskets to make it a one-point game before Drumm and Speight converted four free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the win.

- 19/29: The Crusaders converted 19-of-29 (65.5%) free throws while SAU went 12-for-13 (92.3%) from the charity stripe
- 57.9: MU finished the night 33-of-57 (57.9%) from the field and hit 8-of-21 from beyond the 3-point arc while the Cougars shot 47.3 percent (35-of-74) from the floor and 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from long range
