Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Andrew Ripke

#RV @MUCrusadersMSOC win, will face Warriors in Final

BRIGHTON, Mich.- After a date change and then a location change due to weather and field conditions the Madonna University Men's Soccer team finally took the field for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Semi-Final match against the University of Northwestern Ohio. After a lot of back and forth between the two teams, the Crusaders prevailed by the final score of 1-0.

The Crusaders have now improved to 13-3-3 overall, while the Racers Championship hopes ends with a record of 11-3-6. The Crusaders will now take on Indiana Tech, who beat Lawrence Tech in the other semifinal by a 3-2 score, who won the regular-season title with a conference record of 10-0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team was able to get any scoring or shots off as Madonna controlled the ball on offense
  • The first big play of the game was not a goal, but a red card against the Racers after Devin Morgan received a second yellow card. As a result, the Crusaders played with a man advantage for the final 65 minutes.
  • Six minutes into the second half the Crusaders had a free-kick from the right side that Bruno Piva de Castro put into the box and after a couple of deflections the ball found Rodrigo Castro De Siqueira's foot who put the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • The lead was held all the way to the end, even after a late push from the Racers.
INSIDE THE BOX
  • The Blue and Gold are now 4-6-1 all-time against the Racers
  • The Crusaders outshot the Racers 7-4 over the course of the game and were tied in shots on goal at 3 apiece.
  • The Blue and Gold tallied five corner kicks opposed to four for UNOH
  • Six Crusaders tallied a shot with Breno Stapcinskas pacing the Crusader offense with two shots and one on goal throughout the afternoon
  • Smith recorded his tenth shutout on the season which ties him for second-most in a single season and second all-time with 20.
