FALL BALL: Sykes, Renaud power @MUCrusadersBSB to unbeaten fall

LIVONIA, Mich.- The Madonna University baseball team wrapped up a perfect fall with an eventful Saturday sweep of Cleary University as the Blue and Gold won game one handily, 8-2, before taking game two 5-3 after going 5.1 innings without a baserunner.

The Crusaders improve to 5-0 in the fall while the Cougars fall to 0-4.

GAME 1
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • A pair of hits and a sacrifice fly gave Cleary the early lead, but it was short-lived as Noah Renaud led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a Gordon Ferguson groundout
  • MU added a pair in the third as Ferguson and Frankie Lucska singled, Noah Moore walked and Alex Nicholson walked to take the lead. A Joey Pejuan groundout made it 3-1.
  • The Crusaders broke things open in the fourth as Renaud singled in one, Ferguson doubled him home and Lucska tripled home Ferguson for the five-run advantage. 
  • A run on two hits and an error in the fifth gave Cleary thier second run, but Adrian Reed doubled home Jerad Dokey in the bottom half for the 7-2 lead. 
  • Kyle Aniol, who pinch ran for Moore, stole second and reached third on an error before scoring on Pejuan's two-out single for the final margin, 8-2.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
  • 9: MU tallied nine hits led by two each from Renaud (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI), Ferguson (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Lucska (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI)
  • 2/7:  The Crusaders struck out just twice and drew seven walks
  • 5.0: Daniel Gore earned his second win of the spring as he allowed two runs on seven hits with a strikeout while Blake Garrison tossed a perfect inning and John Beuckelaere struck out the side in the seventh
GAME 2
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • A pair of errors and two hits by the Cougars gave the visitors an early 3-0 lead
  • Madonna was held without a baserunner until Dokey doubled with one out in the sixth. Moore followed with a pinch-hit two-run home run to cut the lead to one. Renaud singled, Lucska walked with two outs and Nick Sykes crushed a high fastball over the trees in left field for the 5-3 lead
  • Beuckelaere sealed the win with his second save this fall as he struck out a pair
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
  • 4: MU finished with four hits, one each by Moore, Dokey, Sykes, and Renaud; the Crusaders also struck out just four times
  • 7: Nate Blain got the start for MU and allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over five innings
  • 2: Kevin Smith, Jr. earned his second career win as she netted a strikeout in his .2 innings of work while Beuckelaere earned save number two on the season
