Kelly nets 1,000th kill as @MUCrusadersVB falls to No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan

LIVONIA, Mich. - It was a bittersweet day for the Madonna University volleyball team as Jodie Kelly collected her 1,000th career kill in the first set, but the Crusaders ultimately fell to third-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University 3-0 (2-22, 25-23, 25-10) inside the MU Activities Center on Friday afternoon.

The Blue and Gold fall to 15-7 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 21-1 in 2019.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • It was a back and forth first set that saw the Crusaders take the early lead, 8-7, only to have the Wildcats score 7-of-8 to go up 14-9. The Crusaders were able to get within one on a Kelly kill to make it 22-21 and the junior from Romeo pounded her 1,000th kill to make it 24-22, but IWU scored the next point for the win.
  • Madonna scored four of the first five points in set two and withstood a few Wildcat rallies to lead 23-22, but the Marion, Indiana program scored the final three points on a kill, an MU error and a block assist for the 25-23 win.
  • After Indiana Wesleyan scored the first point in set three, MU got a pair of kills from Kelly and a Wildcats error to take a 3-1 lead and answered a three-point run with two of their own for a 5-4 advantage. That's when things turned for the Blue and Gold as the NAIA's No. 3 team scored 11-of-12 points to take a 15-6 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-10 match-clinching win.
MILESTONE WATCH
  • Jodie Kelly becomes the third player in the past three seasons to join the 1,000-kill club at MU, matching her sister Karlie Kelly who accomplished the feat in 2017, also doing so in the first set.
