ANN ARBOR, Mich.– The Madonna University women's basketball team had a strong second half as they won the final 20 minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start against Concordia University - Ann Arbor in an 81-55 loss on Saturday afternoon.
While the Crusaders kept the game close in the opening five minutes, the Cardinals closed the first quarter on a 15-4 run to turn a 7-5 game into a 22-9 contest. A 25-10 second period gave the home team a 47-19 lead at the half. An 11-0 run by the Blue and Gold, led by Sydney Brown's eight points, gave MU a 23-18 third quarter win, but the home team outscored MU by three in the final quarter for the 81-55 final.
TURNING POINT
- The 15-4 run over the final 5:55 of the first quarter was the difference in the contest.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Brown scored a team-best 16 points and tallied three steals while Sheldon Bochenek added 12 points, a team-high five rebounds and added two blocks. Cierra Von Zittwitz and Hannah Reinhold each added eight points and grabbed four boards.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Madonna made one 3-point shot in five attempts, but converted 16-of-18 free throws which included an 11-for-12 performance in the third quarter.
- The Cardinals made 8-of-16 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc and won on the glass (46-26) and in the paint, 32-30.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders wrap up a two-game road trip when they return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 9 with a trip to Lima, Ohio to face University of Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
