LIVONIA, Mich.– The Madonna University women's basketball team hung with No. 22 University of Michigan-Dearborn for the better part of the opening quarter, but a late run and tough second period led to an 87-51 victory for the Wolverines in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night.
The Blue and Gold forced six ties in the first 7:30 of the contest as Sydney Brown netted eight of the Crusaders' 18 points. Unfortunately, the Wolverines closed the final 2:30 of the opening stanza on an 8-0 run and turned it into a 31-6 run before the break as UM-Dearborn led 49-24 after two. Madonna fought back in the third, a 21-20 quarter, but with a short bench MU was outscored 17-7 in the final 10 minutes of the 87-51 loss.
TURNING POINT
- A 31-6 run over the final 12:30 minutes of the first half that turned a tie at 18 into a 49-24 lead for the visitors.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Brown finished with 17 points and six rebounds while Hannah Reinhold netted 10 points. Cierra Von Zittwitz tallied seven points and had four assists to go with two steals.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Madonna shot a combined 51 percent (15-for-29) in the first and third quarters, but went 5-for-29 in the second and fourth periods.
- The Crusaders went 1-for-11 from the 3-point arc while the Wolverines went 11-for-26.
- The Blue and Gold won in the paint as they outscored UM-Dearborn 36-22 inside.
