No. 23 @MUCrusadersVB continues dominance of Cardinals

LIVONIA, Mich. – The 23rd-ranked Madonna University volleyball team continued its dominance of Concordia University - Ann Arbor in front of a large homecoming crowd inside the MU Activities Center on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders swept the Cardinals (25-13, 25-13, 25-12) for the 18th-straight time dating back to Sept. 18, 2007 and are now 46-1 against the Ann Arbor program all-time.

HOW IT HAPPENED: No. 23 Madonna (13-4, 5-3 WHAC) 3, Concordia (1-12, 0-6 WHAC) 0

  • Set one

    • The Cardinals kept the game close early, but then Lauren Korth stepped to the service line and served nine straight points as part of a 10-0 Crusaders run to turn a 5-3 margin into a 16-3 advantage. Korth netted two aces in the run while Jodie Kelly had two kills, Nyla Greer had one and the duo added a block assist. Concordia outscored MU 10-9 the rest of the way, but it was MU who took the opener 25-13.

  • Set Two

    • A Madonna service error gave the visitors the lead, but the Blue and Gold answered with five straight points which included a pair of Taylor Suurmeyer kills and two Ryleigh Jacobs service aces. The teams traded side-outs before Korth agan served five straight points with another ace to cap the run up 13-4. After the Cardinals scored three straight, MU took 10-of-11 points to pull ahead 23-8. Yogi Hang served seven of those points which saw Suurmeyer tally three more kills while Ryan Castle and Erica LaBaere each added one and Hang tallied an ace en route to the 25-13 win.

  • Set Three

    • Concordia trailed by just three, 12-9, early one, but then MU took over again. The Blue and Gold won nine of the next 10 points with four kills each from Greer and Kelly and one from Castle to make it 21-10. The Crusaders wrapped up the sweep with a 4-0 run capped by a Cardinals error to secure the 25-12 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Kelly led the team with 14 kills and a .520 attack percentage to go with 11 digs

  • Greer added nine kills and hit .429 while Suurmeyer finish with seven terminations

  • Korth tallied 28 assists while Alyssa Facione led the defense with 15 digs

  • Madonna outhit Concordia by over 300 points as the Crusaders hit .353 (40-10-85) to CU's -.033 (15-18-90)

  • Madonna had 11 aces, three blocks, 38 assists and 48 digs

MILESTONES TO WATCH

  • Head Coach Jerry Abraham (1,193) continues his pursuit of 1,200 career wins and needs seven more.

  • Korth sits in seventh on the all-time assist list with 3,742; 166 shy of Jennie Wind (1998-01) for sixth.

  • The Crusaders begin a busy week as the play four matches in six days, all on the road. The trip starts on Monday, Oct. 1 with a visit to Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids with first serve at 7 p.m.
