GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It's not the start the 23rd-ranked Madonna University volleyball team head in mind as they begin a run of four matches in six days. The Crusaders dropped the first of the daunting road trip in a sweep (19-25, 16-25, 23-25) to Cornerstone University at Mol Arena on Monday night.

Set one

The Golden Eagles took control early as the home team won six of the first seven points. After the teams traded side-outs, the Crusaders took six of the next seven points to take the lead 11-10. The run featured kills from Nyla Greer, Ryan Castle and Erica LaBaere as well as a Betsy Cook service ace. A MU miscue led to a 12-2 run for the Golden Eagles and put MU behind 22-13. Three kills by Jodie Kelly and a pair from Greer highlighted a 5-1 Madonna run to cut the deficit to five, 23-18. The home team followed with two of the next three points for the first set win, 25-19.

Set Two

Cornerstone captured the first three points in set two, then after the teams traded side-outs, the Blue and Gold used a Kelly, Greer block, and a kill from each to tie the game at six. The teams again traded points before the home team scored 8-of-9 points to take a 16-9 lead. The Crusaders didn't back down and used a pair of Kelly kills and some CU miscues to cut the lead to three, 18-15. The Blue and Gold failed to finish though as the home team scored seven of the final eight points for the 25-16 win.

Set Three

It was a better start for the Crusaders in the final game as Madonna captured three of the first four points for the early lead. The Golden Eagles won five of the next six points before a pair of LaBaere kills knotted the set at six. LaBaere again ended a 3-0 run by the home team and sparked the Blue and Gold to a 6-1 rally to take a 12-10 lead. Six of the next seven went to the Golden Eagles before MU responded with a 5-1 rally led by kills from Kelly and Taylor Suurmeyer. An Olivia Sweeney ace and kills by Kelly and Lauren Korth put Madonna in front 23-22, but again the home team closed out the game and the match with three straight points.

Cornerstone outhit Madonna .287 (41-12-101) to .121 (31-19-99) while CU led MU in aces (10-2), blocks (7-4) and assists (39-31) while the Crusaders led the team in digs (43-40)
