Box Score
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Madonna University women's soccer team extended their winning streak to three as they defeated Carlow University under the lights at Cupples Stadium on Saturday evening. Nicolette Vultaggio picked up right where she left off against Huntington University, netting her third goal of the season while Brianna Mozariwskyj and Megan Verant each had standout performances of their own.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
FIRST HALF
-
The Crusaders dictated play early in the contest, out-shooting Carlow 11-3 in the first half before Verant found an open Vultaggio in the 14th minute who was able to find the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. Vultaggio would find herself with another scoring opportunity later in the half but the shot deflected off the post and wide.
-
Following the unrelenting pressure of the Crusaders offense, Mozariwskyj extended the MU lead to 2-0 off a great rush from the back and yet another assist from Verant.
-
SECOND HALF
-
Despite a lack of goals in the second half, the Blue and Gold did not let up. The Crusaders added eight more shots in the final 45 minutes of play, once again holding the Celtics to just three.
-
Julia Stewart, who made two saves in the first half, did not have to make a save in the second half, highlighting the strong defensive play of the young Crusaders defense.
PATTON'S PARLOR
-
"It was a good test for our girls. Carlow is a very physical team that played direct and pushed hard with their athleticism. I thought that we responded well and our young defense held strong throughout the game for the shutout. I was obviously happy with the offense in the first half, but we also controlled play in the second half and had several chances to score. The Carlow keeper made two nice saves and we were offsides on two other opportunities." - Head Coach Paul Patton on the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX
-
Stewart played all 90 minutes for the Blue and Gold, collecting two saves in her second consecutive shutout.
-
12 different Crusaders took shots at the Carlow goal, six of which were stopped by the Carlow keeper and two were able to find the back of the net.
-
All eight shots on frame came from different Crusaders and Verant was able to pick up the lone assists on both goals in the victory.
UP NEXT
