Madonna Rally Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to No. 19 Cumberland (TN)

LEBANON, Tenn. - Madonna erased most of a three-goal deficit but fell one goal short in a 4-3 loss to Cumberland (TN) on Aug. 26 at Lindsey Donell Stad. Angie Abreu's second goal, scored 15 seconds after Madonna first found the net, proved decisive as Cumberland carried a 4-1 lead into halftime and held off a second-half comeback.

Cumberland struck three times in the opening 21 minutes. Uxia Varela scored in the 11th minute with an assist from Abigale Alexander, and Angie Abreu doubled the lead at 14:28 off an assist from Saki Takaki. Victoria Collins made it 3-0 at 20:05, putting Madonna in an early hole.


Canses Gibson started the response at 31:28, converting a chance set up by Lillian Hayter to cut the margin to 3-1. Cumberland answered almost immediately, however, as Angie Abreu scored again at 31:43. The quick reply restored Cumberland's three-goal advantage and became the game-winner. Angie Abreu scored on both shots, while Uxia Varela finished with six attempts.


The second half belonged to Madonna. Carly Roth scored at 55:43 to make it 4-2, then delivered again at 89:22 to pull the team within one with 38 seconds remaining. Carly Roth put both shots on goal and scored twice in 60 minutes. Canses Gibson finished with a goal and an assist, two shots on goal and 75 minutes played, while Lillian Hayter supplied an assist.


Madonna also tightened defensively after halftime, holding Cumberland scoreless over the final 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Paul made two saves in a shutout second half, keeping the comeback within reach through the final whistle. Cumberland finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal, but Madonna turned six attempts on frame into three goals. The result moved Cumberland to 1-1-0 and left Madonna at 0-2-0.
