Madonna Rally Falls Short in 2-1 Loss to Indiana Northwest

LIVONIA, Mich. - Gabby Maldonado scored the decisive goal early in the second half as Indiana Northwest held off Madonna for a 2-1 victory Sunday. Madonna answered less than five minutes later and continued pressing for an equalizer, but Indiana Northwest protected its narrow lead through the final whistle.

Madonna created immediate pressure, putting three shots on goal in the opening 7:05. Madonna Chelsey Chambless forced saves from Indiana Northwest goalkeeper Riley Kain at 4:00 and 4:20 before Madonna Nadine Jawad tested the goalkeeper again at 7:05. Riley Kain stopped all three attempts to keep the match scoreless.

Indiana Northwest broke through at 37:53 when Gianna Witte scored the opening goal, sending the visitors into halftime with a 1-0 advantage. Gabby Maldonado extended the lead to 2-0 at 52:21 with what stood as the game-winning goal. Indiana Northwest recorded assists on both of its goals.

The response from Madonna came quickly. At 57:14, Marlena Ballnik scored an unassisted goal off a free kick to cut the deficit to 2-1. It was Marlena Ballnik's only shot of the match and highlighted a 53-minute performance. Chelsey Chambless helped sustain the attack with three shots, including two on goal, while Nadine Jawad added another shot on target.

Madonna generated five shots in the second half and made a late push for the tying goal. A corner kick by Madonna Marlena Ballnik at 77:19 started one attacking sequence, but Madonna Chelsey Chambless's ensuing shot went wide. Madonna Lillian Hayter missed wide at 83:43, and Madonna Carly Roth, Wide took the team's final recorded shot at 85:10.

Indiana Northwest finished with a 10-8 advantage in total shots and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Addison Beil played all 90 minutes in goal for Madonna and made three saves, matching the total posted by Riley Kain at the other end.

The Crusaders will be back in action on Wednesday, August 26th as they head to Lebanon, Tenn. to take on #19 Cumberland University (Tenn.). Kick off is set for 1:00 PM CST.
