Farkas, @MUCrusadersMSOC outlast No. 21 Spring Arbor, 2-1 in overtime

LIVONIA, Mich. Yuri Farkas Guglielmi netted the game-winner two and a half minutes into overtime to lead the Madonna University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over No. 21 Spring Arbor University at the Madonna Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

  • First Half

    • Spring Arbor had most of the early possession, forcing the Crusaders into five fouls in the first 10 minutes.

    • The first chance of the game came off a Farkas shot 10 minutes in, but it was saved well by Spring Arbor's goalkeeper Zach Weidman.

    • In the 34th minute,  Farkas made a long run down the right wing and was dragged down in the box by a Spring Arbor defender which led to a penalty kick.  Farkas took the kick and knocked it off the keepers hands in the bottom corner for the first goal of the game and his fourth of the season.

    • Both teams started to play more aggressively, with three yellow cards being given out before the half ended.

  • Second Half

    • In the 73rd minute, Joe Smith was called to action as a redirected shot fell to Spring Arbor's Cole Russell who had a good look at the right side of the net, but Smith made a fantastic diving save to deny the Cougars.

    • With just 30 seconds left, Spring Arbor's Jacob Crull equalized the score on a diving header from Tyler Green's cross to finish the action in regulation time.

  • Overtime

    • The Crusaders showed their endurance as they came into overtime with high intensity.

    • Farkas had the final say in the 93rd minute after Wagner Gameiro Febbe fed him a bouncing pass which he chipped over the goalkeeper from 30-yards out for the game-winner.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders outshot the Cougars 13-7 and held the edge in shots on frame, 5-4.

  • Smith recorded three saves on the day.

  • Farkas led the team with seven shots, four on goal and tallied both goals.

  • The Crusaders head up the road to Southfield to face Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Lawrence Tech on Saturday, Sept. 22 with kickoff slated for 4 p.m.
