LEBANON, Tenn. - The Madonna University women's soccer team met their match on Saturday afternoon as they fell for the first time this season to No. 9 Cumberland University by a score of 2-0. The Phoenix, now 7-0-0 on the season, used two early goals in the first half and strong defensive play to hand the Crusaders their first loss, who now sit 5-1-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • FIRST HALF

    • The Crusaders and Phoenix traded shots for the first nine minutes of the game before Phoenix midfielder Autumn Copeland recorded her fourth goal of the season at the 9:54 mark to take a 1-0 lead.

    • Nine minutes later in the 19th minute, the Phoenix extended their lead to two goals off a well placed cross inside the box that Emma Campbell tapped in for her fifth goal of the year.

    • The Crusaders ended the first half tied in shots with the Phoenix as both teams recorded nine.

  • SECOND HALF

    • The strong defensive play of Cumberland only seemed to increase as the game progressed, holding the Crusaders to four shots in the second half, and no shots in the final 15 minutes of play.

    • Julia Henning, Alexis Bozinovski, Megan Verant, and Kayla Gerhardt each recorded shots in the second half for the Crusaders.

  • "Cumberland is an outstanding team and deserves credit for the way that they played today. We had some bright spots in the match and created several dangerous scoring chances but we were not able to convert. Going forward we need to convert our chances and maintain possession better in order to compete against top teams in the NAIA." - Head Coach Paul Patton on the loss

INSIDE THE BOX

  • The Crusaders were outshot in the contest 20-13, while they collected nine shots on goal compared to the Phoenix eight.

  • Nicolette Vultaggio and Julia Henning led the way with a combined six shots, while Bozinovski, Verant, Sierra Nissan, Gehardt, and Kirsten Schapman recorded the remaining seven.

  • Julia Stewart played all 90 minutes for the Crusaders, making six saves in the loss.

  • The Crusaders were not able to record a corner kick while Cumberland earned six corner kicks throughout the match.
