No. 15 @MUCrusadersMSOC comes up short in top-15 showdown

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After a two-hour drive and a slight delay, the 15th-ranked Madonna University men's soccer team couldn't hold a second half lead in a 3-2 loss to No. 14 Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) at MacKenzie Field on the campus of Kalamazoo College on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Cardinal Stritch (2-0-0) 3, Madonna (1-2-0) 2

  • First Half

    • For the second consecutive contest Marlon Freitas connected with Yuri Farkas for the game's first goal. It came in the 11th minute off a restart as Freitas delivered a ball into the box and Farkas soared through the air and got his head around the ball from an extreme angle to place it in the net for the early lead.

    • The Wolves netted the equalizer five minutes later on a cross in from the left side.

  • Second Half

    • Ludvick Asigo kept pace with Farkas for the team lead in goals as he netted his second of the season in the 69th minute as he left footed a rebound off the post from Issei Ito.

    • It was a short-lived lead as an Asigo penalty a minute later led to a CSU penalty kick which again evened the score.

    • After a flurry of action, it was the Wolves All-American, Liam Heywood, who netted the game-winner in the 77th minute as he was able to run onto a ball near the corner of the 18 and struck it well to down the Crusaders.

COACH'S CORNER

  • "I felt we played well tonight, much better showing than we had against Huntington. I'm proud of the way our guys played. We had numerous chances, hit the post 4-5 times in the first half, but they came away with an honorable win. I felt our level of play took a step in the right direction as we prepare for conference play." - Head Coach Mark Zathey on the loss.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • For the second straight game MU held the edge in shots (17-8) and shots on goal (6-4), but lost the game

  • The Wolves got four saves from their keeper while MU's Joe Smith made one

  • Farkas paced the Blue and Gold with five shots with three on frame

  • Asigo and Ito each attempted three shots while the former put two on frame

MILESTONES TO WATCH
