UPLAND, Ind.– Another long bus ride awaited the 25th-ranked Madonna University men's soccer team as they headed to Taylor University, a three-plus hour drive, and came away with a 2-0 win at Turner Stadium on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED: No. 25 Madonna (2-2) 2, Taylor (3-3) 0
-
First Half
-
Despite the long drive, it was the Crusaders who got on the board first as Ludvick Asigo sent a cross into the box and found the foot of Leonardo Abonizio who struck the ball well for the 1-0 lead in the game's third minute.
-
The Taylor defense clamped down for the remainder of the half, but it was the MU back line that really shined as they limited the home team to just two first half shots.
-
Second Half
-
In the 50th minute, the Blue and Gold struck again as Yuri Farkas delivered a touch pass to Marlon Freitas just inside the 18-yard box and the Jaboticabal, Brazil native found the back of the net for the two goal advantage.
-
The game opened up after the tally as the MU offense led to a few counterattacks for the Trojans, but the Crusaders' back line was up to the task in the first clean sheet of 2018.
COACH'S CORNER
-
"I'm proud of the guys tonight. I was a bit worried about the bus ride, but we got the early goal and really helped build our confidence. Taylor responded well to the goal and made it much more difficult to play - they competed physically. Our back line, Marlon, Tony [Anthony Wells], Gian Marco Bevitori and Dudu [Cezar Eduardo Hister Marcancte] did a good job tonight. We leaned on them in the second half and they were up to the task." - Head Coach Mark Zathey on the win
