GARY, Ind. – The Madonna University women's basketball team continued their difficult preseason schedule on the road as they traveled to Indiana University Northwest, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 coaches poll, on Saturday afternoon and lost by a score of 37-73. The loss drops the Crusaders to 0-3 on the season while the Red Hawks improve to 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
The Crusaders only trailed by two at the conclusion of the first quarter thanks to a couple of baskets by Hannah Reinhold and a three-pointer by Naomi Davis that halted an 11-0 run for the Red Hawks.
-
IU Northwest began to pull away early in the second quarter despite Reinhold scoring the lone four points for the Crusaders, sending both teams to the locker room with the Blue and Gold trailing 35-13.
-
Reinhold and Davis continued to pace the offense following the intermission with a quick three-pointer by Reinhold followed by a mid-range jumper by Davis to reduce the Red Hawk lead to 17. As IU Northwest began another offensive run, it was Emily Huff who sunk a deep three ball to limit the damage. Sheldon Bochenek got in on the action with a bucket in the paint before a Claire Leroux three-pointer with just 38 seconds left in the quarter brought the score back down to 54-28.
-
The deficit entering the fourth quarter proved to be too steep as Reinhold, Leroux, Julia Bogart and Ashleigh Ringstad combined for all nine Crusaders points, but still trailed by a score of 37-73 at the final buzzer.
